Devil's Den

"Devil's Den" Located in Gettysburg PA. has the reputation of being one of the most haunted areas of the battlefield.

Drum rolls, and gun shot sounds are a common sound in this area
For some reason camera's used in this area do not function properly Batteries that were new just moments before die for no reason and photos will show up black. It is believed that this is caused by what happened after the battle.
Photography was still new during the Civil War. Photographer Alexander Gardner was at Devil's Den a few days after the battle before the dead were removed.  In order to get a better shot, he instructed his assistants to move the bodies of dead soldiers to different locations, so he could take photos..We now believe that he moved one particular man to the pile of rocks so he could take photos. This has become one of the most well known photos of the battle.

Some people believe that the spirit of the solider can not rest, and it is him that causes the camera's of modern day tourist not to work.  Once they leave the area the camera is fine. Many visitors report hearing disembodied sounds, see orbs and have even seen shadow people in the woods nearby.

The first time I saw the above viedo I thought it was a fake. I had never been to Gettysburg. Now after visiting this area several times I am leaning towards it being real.
I have been both during the day and at night and find it most unusual.

On our recent trip this past Oct. my husband caught this orb on film. (It is at the very top of the photo)

This orb is very tiny and at the top center, but when we lighten this photo it shows up clear on the computer.
Can it be a fluke in the camera? Of course. Orbs are not really considered evidence, but they do make you think

Yha know, I've been to Devils Den a few times, but have never seen or heard anything that was strange to me. Even though it was during the daytime hours, it was just a place where so much happened so long ago.

I, also, was not aware that you could be in the Park after nightfall. Could be that is the reason I've never seen or heard anything like you have. Someday, I must give that a try and see for myself.

That Video is a bit strange. Has me wondering. Again, I'm a skeptic and would have to see for myself to believe.

I wouldn't be at all surprised that Devil's Den is big-time haunted; it's a very tragic area where a lot of men lost their lives and I'm sure that some of their spirits still wander there.

Next time I'm down at Gettysburg I'm going to take advantage of the park not closing until 10:00! I wasn't aware that they stayed open that late so if I can find someone brave enough to go with me, I'm heading on out after dark!

Corker the entire battlefield is open until 10 pm. It is almost as busy after dark as it is in the day time. All of us nutty ghosthunters are out and about then ha ha.

Just let me know Linda when your going again and I will try and come meet you. The only place I dont want to go after dark is Culps Hill, now that is one creepy place!
Devil's Den doesnt bother me. Maybe it is because more people seem to be out there than at Culps.

Very cool video, Patty! I'd never seen that one before. I can't make it out, and I have no idea what they captured, but I have to say I think it's more exciting evidence than anything all of the ghost shows on TV has presented in a while. FUN! (And I'm so jealous of how often you've been to Gettysburg now. Would love to go Haunt Jaunt there. One of these days...)

Patty,

Great post - and I'm glad that you had a great time...:)

Speaking of Alexander Gardner - I've read in several different articles that *prearranging* photographs was pretty well accepted before and during the un-civil war era and for some time afterward. Not saying that all photographers of the day did that, but it is something that would not be approved of today. It makes me wonder how many other pics of the war were *prearranged*...Why photographers would feel the need to do that, I don't know - to lessen the gruesome reality, or perhaps to get 'that famous pic', I don't know...but in any case, I'm glad this practice is no longer accepted - I don't feel any photographer should ever touch, much less move, the body of any soldier.

You lucky girl! I'd love to go there. It's the rocks--I'm telling you, wherever there's a good haunting--there's rocks involved.

This Xmas I'm giving a gift to everyone whose blog I follow--I'm telling them what I love about their blog. Since I follow over 90 blogs, I'm starting now.

I love your blog for lots of reasons--you're a real person and I love the way you word things and that you get all excited about Gettysburg (I thought I was the only one!) You're warm and just the sight and layout of your blog makes me feel like I'm checking in at home. Keep it up!

I really enjoy your blog, and unfortunately have not been to visit in sometime. I'm happy to find my way back, this is a great entry! I consider myself quite skeptical, & generally judge most "ghost" videos quite critically but that is one that has stumped me for quite some time!! In truth, I really want to believe it's a legitimate capture.

My husband & I are going to Gettysburg in two weeks for my birthday, this will be our first trip up...words cannot even express how excited I am for this trip! It's better than Christmas morning. ;)

What a fun blog! I'm so glad you let me know about it.

I like your level-headed approach to ghosts and haunted places. Keep writing! We need more common-sense people with a gift for writing, and great photos to share.
